A positive scenario for Italian hospitality, which, thanks to its resources such as nature, archaeological and cultural heritage, and food and wine, has continued to record a significant increase in tourist flows since 2014.
According to the data emerging from the new Report on Hospitality Properties in Italy, published by World Capital In collaboration with Federalberghi and sponsored by ENIT, Italian hotels have been regaining competitiveness in recent years, recording a 13,4% increase from 2014 to 2017.
Focusing on accommodation facilities in the luxury segment (the so-called “Luxury Hotels”), the market is significantly represented by the Consortia that any hotel with certain quality standards (whether part of a hotel chain or not) can join.
The two most representative Consortia in this sense are: The Leading Hotels of The World (TLH) e Small Luxury Hotels (SLH); to these two are added also Relais & Châteaux e Preferred Hotel Group, which however, compared to the first two, have a strong geographical connotation in France and the United States respectively, where they were born.
Analyzing the offerings of these four Consortia, Italy, which already boasts the greatest diversification in the world in terms of both type and quality of accommodation, and is the leader in Europe in terms of number of beds, also confirms its leadership in luxury hotels.
In fact, according to the World Capital survey, in 2018 there were 204 luxury hotels in Italy affiliated with the aforementioned Consortia, equal to 9,9% of the structures worldwide and 40% of the 5-star hotels in Italy (500 in total).
Going into more detail in the analysis by World Capital, which examined the number of hotels belonging to the 4 consortia present in 7 countries, Italy, France, USA, UK, Switzerland, Germany and Spain, it emerges that in our country there are over 120 luxury hotels belonging to the two most significant Consortia (TLH and SLH), much more than in France (80) and in the USA (58). In particular, 66 structures are part of Small Luxury Hotels (SLH), 57 of The Leading Hotels in World (TLH), 45 are included among the Relais & Châteaux and 36 are part of the Preferred Hotel Group.

“The national hospitality heritage is unmatched in terms of intrinsic and potential quality.” - declares Lucia Dattola, World Capital Research Department – In recent years the Italian hotel real estate market has been experiencing strong positive signals and a great deal of interest from investors, especially in prime cities such as Milano, Rome, Venice and Firenze and in the most renowned tourist destinations.”
